During April’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), we played a proactive role in empowering young girls in our communities by partnering with various organizations and stakeholders to organize a Girls’ Forum at the YMCA Shauri Moyo Hall in Kamukunji. The event brought together over 300 girls, aged 13 to 19, from the Makadara, Kamukunji, Mathare, and Starehe subcounties, equipping them with important information and resources on the topic of sexual violence.

The forum was structured to be both educational and engaging. We kicked off with dynamic group discussions, allowing the girls to openly share their thoughts and experiences in a safe environment. These discussions were followed by an insightful panel session, where experts delved into the different forms of sexual violence, the importance of reporting such incidents, and the steps involved in doing so. The girls also learned practical self-defense techniques and were educated about their rights, ensuring they left with a well-rounded understanding of how to protect themselves and seek help when needed.

To keep the event lively and memorable, we incorporated a Q&A session, where the girls could ask questions and clarify any doubts they had. This interactive segment encouraged active participation and made the learning process more personalized. We also added entertainment elements to the day, striking a balance between serious discussion and fun, ensuring the girls remained engaged throughout.

The forum was not just about imparting knowledge; it was about empowering these young girls, giving them the confidence and tools they need to navigate challenges related to sexual violence. By combining education with enjoyment, we created an impactful and memorable experience that resonated with the participants long after the event concluded.

Through initiatives like these, we remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting and empowering the young girls in our community, ensuring they have the knowledge and confidence to protect themselves and advocate for their rights.
