UN Women Executive Director’s visit

In May 2023, the UN Women Executive Director, Sima Bahous, made a significant visit to the Maisha Girls Safe House. Accompanying her on this important visit were Anna Mutavati, the UN Women Country Director, along with her dedicated team, as well as Wangechi Wachira, the Director of the Centre for Rights Education and Awareness (CREAW), and her team, and members of the GVRC Kenya team. This visit was more than just a tour; it was a meaningful opportunity for these distinguished guests to see firsthand the work being done and to engage directly with the girls who are receiving care at the Safe House.

During her visit, Sima Bahous took a moment to commend the young girls for their incredible bravery and resilience. Her acknowledgment was not just a formality but a heartfelt recognition of the courage these girls have shown in the face of adversity. She also took the opportunity to highlight the critical role that the Maisha Girls Safe House plays in offering not just physical safety, but also shelter and dignity to survivors of sexual violence.

The visit highlighted the crucial importance of the work being done at the Safe House and reinforced the commitment of UN Women and its partners to supporting and empowering survivors. It served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing need for support and advocacy for those who have experienced sexual violence, and the significant impact that such safe spaces can have on their recovery and empowerment.
